In the world of business, the trajectory of success often mimics the unpredictable path of a golf ball. Few understand this better than Rich Moyer, a former professional PGA golfer turned serial entrepreneur, investor, and franchisor.

Today, Rich is best known for revolutionizing the business landscape with his flagship franchise, Hoppin’, but his journey from the greens to entrepreneurial greatness is a testament to resilience, strategic risk-taking, and a relentless pursuit of personal growth.

A Swing into Business

Rich Moyer’s story is not a typical tale of smooth transitions and uninterrupted successes. Beginning his career as a professional golfer, Rich’s early days were marked by discipline, early mornings, and relentless practice—a routine that would later serve him well in the business world.

“Ten years ago, my life was all about waking up at 5 a.m., working out, and then being on the phone with clients until late at night,” he recalls. This dedication laid the foundation for his first business venture at the age of 26, which saw him earn an impressive $11.9 million within just three years.

The Path of Sacrifice

The journey was far from easy. Rich vividly remembers the sacrifices made along the way, often skipping social events and personal milestones to focus on his business. “I gave up a lot during that time for what I wanted—freedom later on in life,” he shares. His early days in business were marked by long hours and the burden of being the go-to person for everything. “I was the business,” he emphasizes, highlighting the all-consuming nature of his early entrepreneurial efforts.

Lessons from the Fairway

Rich’s background in golf provided valuable lessons that translated seamlessly into his business philosophy. “Golf taught me the importance of short-term memory,” he explains. “You can hit one bad shot, but it’s on to the next one.”

This ability to move past mistakes and focus on the next opportunity became a cornerstone of his entrepreneurial mindset. The solitary nature of golf also mirrored his initial experiences in business, where despite having supportive friends and family, the journey often felt lonely.

Mentorship and Team Building

One of Rich’s defining characteristics is his commitment to mentorship. He attributes much of his success to the guidance he received and is passionate about paying it forward. “Mentorship has been a guiding force in my entrepreneurial path,” he says. His approach to building businesses involves not just scaling but also empowering others to avoid the pitfalls he encountered.

“I want others to grow and scale their businesses without having to take on a bunch of venture capital or go through unnecessary trial and error.”

Rich’s success with Hoppin’ is a testament to his ability to build strong teams and delegate effectively. “Now, I have multiple companies with amazing teams,” he notes. His leadership style is about instilling ownership and trust in his team members, allowing them to make decisions and learn from their failures. “I want my team to fail and learn. That’s how we all grow.”

Embracing Failure

For Rich, failure is not a setback but a trampoline to success. “If you fear failing, you’ll never start,” he asserts. This philosophy is rooted in his belief that real learning comes from mistakes, not successes. “You don’t really learn anything when you’re successful. You learn everything by failing and just taking the action to do it.”

This action-oriented mindset is a critical lesson he imparts to aspiring entrepreneurs. “Action over everything,” he advises. In a world where it’s easy to get stuck in analysis paralysis, Rich emphasizes the importance of moving forward, learning, and adapting along the way.

Balancing Life and Business

Recently, Rich’s life has taken a new turn with the arrival of his 10-month-old baby. This new chapter has brought about a different set of priorities. “Being a father has changed everything,” he admits. Balancing the demands of a growing family with his business responsibilities requires a strong support system and effective delegation. “It’s crucial to have a great team in place. Without them, it would be impossible to maintain a healthy balance.”

A Broader Mission

Beyond business, Rich is driven by a deeper mission: to make a positive impact on the world. “It’s not just about making money,” he emphasizes. “It’s about raising up those around me and doing the right thing.” This philosophy extends to his mentorship efforts, where he finds fulfillment in helping others succeed.

“There’s a bigger reason why we’re on this earth,” he reflects. “Mentoring the next generation of entrepreneurs is more rewarding than any financial gain.”
