Ep327: Turning Passion Into Paycheck With Recipe Developer and Blogger Laney Schwartz
December 14, 2022
Laney has always been passionate about helping people understand concepts, go from point A to point B, and enjoy seeing lightbulb moments happen to people around her. She started her career as a teacher. Blogging about recipes and teaching people to cook with confidence came naturally.
She had no idea that people made a living off of food blogs when she discovered them. Laney loved food and found the idea of sharing her recipes with the world really exciting.
She did not know how to start, but she knew she could, and she was confident that she could do it well. Her blog has now been featured in several podcasts and magazines, such as Voyage LA, LA Magazine, and Shape Magazine.
Laney shares with us her tips on how to turn your passion into a paycheck:
Just start. “It’s going to be messy. It’s going to be ugly. It’s going to be emotional. It’s going to be imperfect and inconsistent.” Starting a new venture can be quite scary, but we often fall into the trap of overplanning and use it as an excuse to delay and procrastinate. The key is to just start and deal with whatever comes your way as you go along. The only one expecting perfection is yourself, and if you wait until everything is 100%, the ship might have already sailed.
Learn to prioritize. Laney does not believe in balancing and juggling so many things at one time. Instead, she knows how to prioritize. Knowing what season you’re in and which bucket needs your attention the most helps you decide where to put your full energy.
Ask for help. You know what they say: “No man is an island,” and “It takes a village.” So many people around you are happy to see you succeed, and most would do anything to help if they could. However, it’s important to remember that you need to ask. Assuming that everyone around you already knows what kind of help you need is counterproductive, and this is just setting yourself up for disappointment.
Follow your gut. Whatever feels like the right path for you—even though it might seem like it isn’t the right thing to do, or other people do not agree with you, or even if it feels too unconventional—do it.
